Statues!

Ever since she first noticed the colossal female lions guarding the entrance to Prospect Park several months ago, Serena has been fascinated and excited by statues. We took her to the small sculpture garden behind the Brooklyn Museum and let her be amazed by the enormous winged lady, the gargoyles, and the miscellaneous heads scattered around.


Most of the sculptures are remnants from New York City architecture that no longer exists. The museum rescued the sculptural elements and preserved them in this pretty paved garden. I liked the large dragon perching over the entrance door. Serena's favorite by far, however, was the replica Statue of Liberty (artist unknown). Serena is actually in the photo below, the tiny figure at the bottom left of the statue's base.

Trip to Brooklyn Botanic Garden

Yesterday was warm and sunny, so we all went to the Botanic Garden here in Brooklyn. The cherry and magnolia trees were in full, gorgeous blossom, as were tulips, daffodils (including one named the Kilworth!), pansies, and all kinds of other flowers.


After a while, we all got a bit peckish, so we went to the snack bar for a treat. Serena ate an entire chocolate-covered chocolate ice cream bar!

Serena loved the water lily pond. The lilies are not yet in bloom, but the bright orange koi were pertly swimming around, and Serena observed their wriggling intently.

Ribbons and Bows!

Serena has, until this point, been extremely averse to hair ornamentation of any kind. I have bought bows, clips, barrettes, ribbons, headbands, you name it, and she howls at the mere sight of all of them. It's been a bit depressing, because since she is such a baldy still, she is frequently mistaken for a boy, even when she is dressed head to toe in pink. It would be such an easy fix to stick a bow on her head and be done with it.

But suddenly, she finally decided that not only are bows acceptable, but the other day she wanted ALL of them in her hair simultaneously. I think the results are very cute!

The Artist at Work

Serena loves to paint, and it's my goal to have her beautiful paintings cover every inch of the walls of our hallway by the end of the summer.


She has really enjoyed the past week: first it was her birthday, and she got loads of presents, people came over to play, she got cupcakes and other sweets, we went to the playground practically 6 times a day, and it went on for about a week. Then it was Passover with tons of people at her grandparents' house, and then Easter at a friend's house (including another toddler) complete with Easter egg hunting and bunny cake!

A Walk in Fort Greene

Finally the weather is getting nice!

Last weekend we took Serena out for a stroll in our greening neighborhood, and she had a great time. We all love the picturesque brownstones and slate sidewalks.


Later we took her to brunch at a sweet Mexican restaurant called Bonita, which has blue park benches built into the creamy white walls, some pretty grey painted brick, and fantastic pork burritos. Serena had scrambled eggs - didn't want to try the unfamiliar stuff. Oh well, next time.

Getting Dressed

Getting dressed is more difficult than getting undressed, especially when you try to put on 3 outfits at once. But hey, at least the color palette is a unified theme. More or less.
